ESPN's Bait and Switch Tactics

I'd like to take a post to highlight a symptom of summer that Kevin and John G. pointed out to me the other day...Summer is the sports doldrums.

No football. No basketball. No exciting sports activities of any substance. Baseball? Let's be honest. Watching baseball on TV is NOT the same as watching a football game or a basketball game in real life, or even on television for that matter. That's because, as my long-standing theory prescribes, any game that can be won by a margin of 1-0 is NOT A GAME WORTH WATCHING! Although baseball games can be fun to go to in real life, just for the experience.

31-28? That's a game.
17-3? That's a game as well.
110-98? Also a game.

But 1-0? Come on.

Summer means hot weather AND we're hard up for sports...just meandering through meaningless horse races, bowling, and IndyCar races until NFL pre-season starts on August 3. But if that weren't bad enough, let me say one more thing. I came home this afternoon, noting that a soccer game was supposed to be televised that evening on ESPN2. I figured, Hey, sounds great. I'll have that on while I pack my stuff and Kyle's stuff for this weekend out of town. Yes, soccer can also be won by a margin of 1-0, the same as baseball, but at least soccer features non-stop, continuous action for 90 minutes...as opposed to baseball. However, much to my chagrin, when the appointed hour of 6:00 p.m. rolled around, I turned to ESPN2 only to find a WNBA game in progress. Now, I don't wanna say anything to piss anyone off. And as an attorney, and a chick, I fully believe that women are capable of doing almost anything that a guy can do. However, that doesn't include professional sports. Girls shouldn't play professional sports any more than boys should be cheerleaders. And for ESPN to bait and switch us, by representing that a real sporting event is going to be broadcast at 6:00 p.m., at a point in the month where all the other channels are devoid of real sports, just to get everyone's hopes up to watch a real game and then to switch it to the WNBA with no warning whatsoever? Well...that ain't right. Enough said.
